Disability limits a person with movements, senses, or cognition. But there’s much more than it cannot ever touch. A person is not just gifted with physical abilities but much more than that. In the recent decade, people with disabilities have started gaining appreciation and recognition from the society, which was much-needed for years. They have started getting acceptance, love, and respect they deserve.

Disability is having a special ability, which people mostly fail to understand. Indian society has taken a step forward to support the people who possess such skills. They are achieving global fame for themselves and the country, not just in the field of arts and science, but also in sports.

So, when archer Pooja Rani delivered a splendid performance, the whole nation stood up and acknowledged the pride she brought. She is the first para-archer from India who competed in the Rio Olympics, 2016. The moment of pride for Pooja starts with innumerable struggles paving the way to fame.

Pooja is the eldest of the four children born to Bhola Ram, a bin-collector-turned-scrap vendor, from a Dalit family. She was affected by polio that left her legs deformed. Her family in Rohtak struggled to make ends meet.

Pooja faced a lot of hardship in her life but gained motivation from every barrier. She never stopped working hard. She completed her Masters in English, from Maharishi Dayanand University (MDU) through scholarships. She would always prove herself and make the best use of opportunities.

Pooja started off her sports career from being a discus thrower. She took on to archery as there was very less career scope in discussing throwing. Pooja never wanted to see herself less than others and she would do everything to attain success. Back in 2013, she decided to take up archery in an academy, which was run by Suhag, who had a coaching center in Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex.

Pooja’s efforts started paying off as she bagged prizes and recognition for her performance and her special ability. She has won numerous national and international competitions and made the country proud.

Today, Pooja Rani is a part of Top 30 Under 30 at HT Youth Forum 2017, which defines her dexterity with archery making it her sign of personality.

Pooja has proved that people who try over and over again never fail. All it needs is hard work and persistence to get to a position you aspire. Instead of accepting her fate and sitting at home, she took a step forward to achieve her dreams and not just made her family proud but also the entire country.
